Currently I'm employed as a Marketing / Business Development Manager for a German medium size Insurance brokerage. I engage in the development of niche / unique products for the German market. Current projects are the development of veterinary fees/mortality insurance for pets. Pet insurance is a major insurance business field in the UK, but very much unheard of in Germany at the moment. I'm hoping to change that though. I essentially develop a product in full and then seek underwriting. So far a dog and horse insurance product has been developed and I'm working on establishing a relationship with an interested underwriter. Quite an exciting venture as the potential is huge. I won't bore you with further details (unless you're an underwriter).

A further element of my current employment is that of contingency insurance. Mainly concert / event insurance against risks such as cancellation, abandonment, short fall, liability etc. Although it isn't going to make me my millions, it is nevertheless good business.

I am also the "computer man" at work. If the printer doesn't work, I'm the one who has to go in and patiently request that they check it is plugged in before they holler for assistance next time ;-) Joking aside I look after and maintain all the IT systems at work and have developed a company website.

Prior to my current employment, I qualified and worked as an independent financial adviser to the forces in Germany. Essentially giving group briefs to Squadrons/Regiments at a time, on various aspects of insurance (mainly Kit insurance and basic life cover). This position worked out very well and I was pretty successful if I may so myself until... the cold war ended and most soldiers went back to the UK (in my district anyway). Hence I sought work on the German net.

Ulli teaches English / Social studies in a Volkshochschule (Open college/University). She holds a degree in "Sozial Pädagogik" which is Social Sciences/Teaching. She speaks better English than I does (sic) She thoroughly enjoys her work and is a natural at it. Ulli also works in a government project for single mothers as a social worker / teacher, in order to help them achieve a qualification as Kindergarten teacher, secretaries and care workers for the aged.

Alison has decided she wants to be a Princess when she grows up lol. Oh the innocence :)

I'm in my 12th year in Germany now and although I miss the little things in UK now and then (decent crisps, baked beans, steak and kidney pies, etc. etc.) I'm happy here and although not wealthy, we are both satisfied with our jobs and I have no great longing to return back to England. Although America would be nice...
